Celebrating Local Heroes: EFL Community Weekends Nominees

As part of the EFL’s Community Weekends, running from Saturday 22 February to Sunday 3 March, local heroes from EFL clubs have been recognised for their incredible contributions to their communities. This initiative highlights the tireless efforts of community staff and volunteers, who work 365 days a year to make a difference.

Notts County is proud to have honoured five incredible nominees during the match against Tranmere Rovers at Meadow Lane. Each nominee was presented with their own EFL pennant in recognition of their dedication to community projects and initiatives. Here are our five Notts County nominees:

Asia Asghar

Asia receives her award from Notts legend Les Bradd.

Asia has been a driving force behind an inclusive football initiative for women and girls from South Asian backgrounds. Recognising the barriers and lack of representation in football, particularly for South Asian women, Asia partnered with Notts County Foundation to create women’s and girls-only football sessions. These sessions provide a safe, empowering environment for participants to enjoy football and develop new skills. Through her work, Asia is challenging stereotypes and opening doors for women and girls in her community, allowing them to engage in football on their terms.

Laura Cameron

Laura is welcomed and presented her award by Notts’ Les Bardd.

Laura’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility has transformed the experience for disabled supporters at Notts County. As the driving force behind the reintroduction of the Disabled Supporters Association (DSA), Laura has ensured that disabled fans have a voice and receive full support on matchdays. Thanks to her leadership, the DSA has become an integral part of the club’s culture, ensuring that disabled fans can enjoy the matchday experience from start to finish. Laura’s proactive approach goes beyond compliance—she’s built a community where disabled fans truly feel at home.

Jim Louth

Jim stands proud with his EFL Pennant with Les Bradd.

Jim’s battle with bowel cancer has been both physically and emotionally challenging, but through his involvement in Notts County Foundation’s Cancer and Rehabilitation Exercise (CARE) programme, Jim has not only regained physical strength but also found a sense of camaraderie and support. Jim’s determination has made him an inspiration to others in the programme, often encouraging his peers to push themselves further. His positive attitude has fostered an environment where everyone feels motivated to give their best, both physically and mentally.

Caron Cotton

Caron proudly receiving her pennant at Meadow Lane.

A lifelong Notts County supporter, Caron’s connection to the club grew even deeper when she joined Notts County Foundation’s Right Mind programme. After her son moved into assisted living, Caron focused on improving her own mental health and staying active. Through Right Mind, Caron has not only worked on her own wellbeing but has become a source of energy and positivity for others in the group. Her welcoming spirit and personal experiences help others feel included, supported, and motivated to stay active.

David Williams

CARE participants gather to celebrate David’s (on front row right, holding EFL pennant) recognition.

David’s recovery from prostate cancer has been a difficult journey, compounded by the challenge of caring for his wife, who is wheelchair-bound. Notts County Foundation’s CARE programme has also played a crucial role in David’s recovery, offering him a supportive space to regain strength and improve his physical fitness. David’s participation in various activities, from badminton to ten-pin bowling, has not only improved his own health but also fostered a sense of friendship and mutual support within the group. His positivity and dedication have made him a role model for others.

We are incredibly proud of these local heroes and their selfless contributions to our community. Their dedication serves as an inspiration to us all, and it’s an honour to celebrate their efforts during the EFL’s Community Weekends.
